Sand Stoners
Whenever I see photos from sand-sculpture contests like this weekend's New England Sand Sculpting Festival at Revere Beach, I'm struck first by how you never see anything as whimsical as sandcastles at these things anymore, and second by how what you do see is obviously just too weird, creepy, and Dungeons-and-Dragony to make any sense unless you're stoned out of your mind.
This year, eight "master sculptors" competed for $18,000 in prizes. The results were typically stonerific.
You had your de rigueur old stoner troll...

Maybe Xanax or Lexapro could sponsor next year's competition. Get these people on some prescription drugs, and maybe we'll see fewer trolls, talking housplants and psychotic bird attacks, and a proper sandcastle or two popping up here and there instead.

Was there a theme to the sculptures? I personally think the troll is wonderful, but I was confused by the bird man and the hand of God(?) reaching out to the racecar. Maybe they all took mushrooms beforehand.

It's a good question (whether or not there was a theme to the competition -- there were definitely magic mushrooms).
